Malmesbury Abbey

Malmesbury has rightly been called the "Queen of Hilltop Towns", being England's oldest borough with a rich history over 1000 years. Set on a hill, circled by the River Avon, the skyline is dominated by the imposing Norman Abbey. Adjacent to the Abbey are the beautiful Abbey House Gardens.

Tetbury Market Hall

Tetbury (4 miles)

Tetbury is proud of its 1300 years of recorded history since 681, when Tetta's Monastery was mentioned in a charter by King Ethelred of Mercia. In the Middle Ages, Tetbury was an important market town for the Cotswolds wool trade and the town centre is still dominated by the splendid pillared Market House, built in 1655 (see left). The town is known as an 'architectural gem', as many of the wool merchants' houses still look as they did 300 years ago.

Westonbirt Arboretum

Westonbirt Arboretum (6 miles)

Westonbirt Arboretum, near Tetbury, is perhaps the most important and widely known arboretum in the United Kingdom. It is managed by the Forestry Commission, and was established in 1829 by Robert Stayner Holford, and was later extended by his son Sir George Holford. It comprises some 18,000 trees and shrubs, over an area of approximately 600 acres (2.4 km˛). Its 17 miles (27 km) of marked paths are popular with visitors, and provide access to a wide variety of rare plants. It is a World Heritage Site, which also hosts amazing outdoor concerts in the summer.

Cirencester Parish Church

Cirencester (8 miles)

Cirencester is a charming town with a population of around 18,000 people, set in the English Cotswolds It was one of the most important places in Roman Britain, second only to London, and remains an important regional attraction, claiming the title "The Capital of the Cotswolds".

Its market square is dominated by the cathedral-like St. John Baptist church, one of the largest churches in England. The south porch, with its impressive fan vaulting, was built about 1490.

Other attractions include the recently refurbished Corinium Museum and extremely good shopping.

We are an ideal centre for exploring the beautiful Cotswold towns and villages – Stow on the Wold, Bourton on the Water, Upper and Lower Slaughter, Bibury and Burford, to name but a few.

Bath, Cheltenham and Bristol all have excellent theatres: the area abounds with golf courses and racing is regularly held at Cheltenham, Bath, Newbury and Chepstow racecourses.

Polo is also very popular - and there are many clubs nearby, including those at Westonbirt and Cirencester Park.

There are many historic National Trust properties in the area and, for garden lovers, there are many beautiful gardens to visit.

The Cotswold Water Park is only 5 miles away and has all water sports available.
